Being of Service

There are so many people today on a quest to discover their purpose in life—to uncover the unique, God-given talent they possess, and use it in this physical world in order to make a difference. But no matter the person or the talent, I believe the common thread in all of us is to use it in service to others. To me, that is our ultimate purpose.

It’s for this reason that we at Elevated Existence decided to create the Elevated Existence Spiritual Service Award. We wanted to highlight one individual each year who has not only dedicated his or her life to serving others, but is also raising the world’s consciousness by spreading the gift of spirituality, and ultimately improving the quality of lives.

And we couldn’t think of anyone who fits this description better than Louise Hay.

At the age of 83, Hay has spent the last 30 years of her life in service to others. Whether counseling as a minister with The Church of Religious Science in New York; working with AIDS groups; self-publishing revolutionary books to help people heal in both body and mind; starting Hay House publishing, now one of the largest international publishers of self-help books; or developing a number of non-profit charities to help others in need, Hay exemplifies service in all that she does.

Life wanted this to become a very special enterprise, and it gave me all the tools to allow it to happen, even though I wasn’t looking for it, she reveals to Elevated Existence in this issue’s cover story, when speaking about the empire she has built. I just want to experience the next thing life has in store for me, and I know only good lies before me, so whatever it is, it’s going to be good.

Also in this issue is an interview with Chopra Center co-founder Dr. David Simon on the connection between emotions and disease in the body, and how to move Beyond the Symptoms, to achieve true healing in mind, body and soul. And in the feature article Inspired by Devyne, readers will meet entertainment mogul Devyne Stephens, who after achieving success in the music industry and working with artists including Alicia Keys, Pink and Akon, is now focused on giving back through his foundation, Devyne Intervention. He is currently raising money to help build a children’s hospital in his hometown of Atlanta.

The phrase, ‘It is better to give than to receive’—I truly believe that, Stephen’s tells Elevated Existence. It’s the gift of sharing. God gave me a gift, and I’ve been blessed to be able to share that gift to help others.

Additionally, I am proud to say that in only a little more than a year of publication, Elevated Existence is now an award-winning magazine, having won a 2009 Bronze Folio: Magazine Eddie Award for Best Single Article in the Religious/Spiritual category for Searching for Spirit, published in the September 2008 issue, as well as a Certificate of Excellence in Design from the New Jersey Art Directors Club for the cover story layout of its premiere issue in June 2008. I would like to personally thank everyone on our staff for continually going above and beyond, and making Elevated Existence a top-quality publication.

I wish you all a happy, healthy and blessed holiday season, and remember: the best gift you can give is to be of service. There is no better feeling than knowing you’ve helped someone, and realizing what you give is what you will receive.

Blessings and love to you all!
