The Spiritual Side of Business
In January 2008, while in the process of creating Elevated Existence LLC in order to publish this magazine, I discovered a book called
Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success, by Russell Simmons, often referred to as the godfather of hip hop. Knowing Russell Simmons as a successful entrepreneur in the music, fashion and jewelry industry, as well as an avid yogi who also practiced meditation, I was intrigued to read his advice. The book focuses on business, with an emphasis on spirituality.
I began to read, and couldn’t put the book down. I underlined paragraphs, turned down page corners and recommended it to friends. I knew immediately I wanted to interview him for this magazine, and in November 2008, only 10 months later, I did just that. The result is the timely cover story in this issue.
During a time when mass layoffs in all industries are the norm, and many people find themselves headed in new directions, Russell Simmons offers an encouraging voice, explaining that by staying true to yourself, practicing giving and acceptance, and refusing to compromise your core values, you can succeed and achieve your dreams. To me, he is proof that spirituality and business can co-exist and form the ultimate path to success.
Russell Simmons may be a multi-millionaire today, but he wasn’t born into it, and his advice and knowledge applies to anyone at any level of his or her career.
Go to work every day and be inspired by the challenges, he explains in the cover story.
Enjoy the process and the weight and the burden that is perceived as reality, because it’s an illusion. It’s your dedication and focus that makes you happy. You have to remind yourself of that when the world seems to be caving in and the stock is not going the way it’s supposed to go.
Along the same lines, Dr. Laurie Ann Levin writes about applying spirituality to the creation of a new business in her article called
Spiritual Equity, offering a glimpse of how she created her own business. The theme is carried on in the book spotlight for this month,
The Mindful Leader: Awakening Your Natural Management Skills through Mindfulness Meditation, by Michael Carroll, who explains how we can carry the practice of meditation into our working lives.
I’m also excited to present exclusive coverage from Louise Hay’s
You Can Heal Your Life conference in New York this past November. Authors including Gregg Braden, Mona Lisa Shultz, Cheryl Richardson and Christiane Northrup joined together for an inspiring day focused on how thoughts and feelings create everything around us, including disease in our bodies.
This conference inspired the topic of this issue’s giveaway – The Power to Heal Gift Box. In addition to the books, CDs, DVDs, etc. included in our gift boxes, our Contributing Editor, T Love, is gifting a free distant healing Reiki session – a $45 value! To enter, visit our blog at Elevated Ideas Onlineand leave a comment with your full name before May 1. You can also read about my unique experience with T and distant Reiki on that blog.
