Actor Gerard Butler faced a near-death experience due to a surfing accident in 2011 while filming “Chasing Maveriks.” Hit by a wave, Butler was trapped underwater as large waves rolled over him, according to a report by the Coventry Telegraph. He eventually got pulled by a jet ski and taken to a local hospital in San Francisco.

“Next year my resolution is to embark on a lot of internal, more spiritual things, and explore that side of my life,” he said at the end of 2012. “That accident made me reassess a lot of stuff. On the positive side, it made me realize you live from moment to moment. I’ve had a few close calls but that was probably the closest. So now I regard life as having different chapters, and it’s about enjoying each one, and that’s my focus for 2013.”
