Law of Attraction: The Difference Between Waiting and Expecting

By Sherry Winn

Two weeks ago a client asked me the difference between waiting and expecting. The disparity is the gap between fear and faith. Waiting represents wishing and indicates you don’t believe your request is going to happen. Expecting is acting as if you are receiving what you desire.

When you wait you are removed from action. When you expect you take action.

Imagine for a moment you want a particular job, but you don’t believe you can have it. You wait for the job to manifest but fail to take action toward getting the job. Why don’t you take the necessary actions? What belief holds you to waiting rather than acting?

A friend of mine, Maggie, decided she wanted to own her own salsa company. She knew from her experience of winning a salsa-cooking contest that her salsa was amazing. Maggie also knew if she could get her salsa in front of people they would buy it. The challenge was getting her salsa in grocery stores. Through persistence Maggie eventually convinced some of the local grocery store managers to purchase small amounts of her salsa for their stores.

This was not enough for Maggie. She wanted to sell her salsa in larger quantities. Maggie asked other food company owners how they got their product into the chain stores, and they told her it was next to impossible, and it took years of hard work.

Maggie didn’t accept their answers. She expected her dream to come true. She wrote down a list of 90 potential grocery stores and called all of them. At the end of every call, Maggie received the same answer: “No.” She looked at the list, thought about it, and started calling every store manager again. One manager asked if she could meet the next day at 8:00 a.m. Without hesitation, Maggie said she would be there. She jumped in her car and drove all night to make it to the meeting the next morning where she promptly convinced the store manager to purchase her salsa.

Maggie expected her dream to come true. She persisted with actions until her dream become a reality. The key is she did the hard work before she started making salsa. What was the hard work? Maggie worked on her faith.

So many people believe the work is done when they ask. This is the preliminary work. It is the beginning of the race. When you ask, you are at the starting line. If you remain at the starting line, you are waiting for something amazing to happen to you. What happens is you never get to the finish line, because you never ran the race.

How do you discover the faith Maggie possessed?

1.  Take responsibility for what you see in life. Interpret life as a positive experience.

2.  Choose the feelings you want to experience. Choose to feel good even when the events happening around you don’t seem to line up with what you desire.

3.  Align yourself with positive people who inspire and believe in you.

4.  Understand what you think becomes what you perceive and what you perceive is what you live.

5.  Seek books that teach abundance and worthiness.

6.  Practice the art of forgiveness. Your power is in letting go of the past and living in the present.

7.  Release self-judgment. Judgment prevents you from the vision of achievement.

8.  Tell yourself every day you are a creator and you choose to create abundance.

9.  Look for “facts,” which verify you are moving toward your desires.

10.  Affirm you were born as worthy. How could you not be worthy when you came from Source Energy who only knows worthiness?

People who wait, see signs they can’t get what they want and stop trying. People who expect their dreams to manifest move forward toward their goals. Are you going to stop at the starting line or do you have the Maggie mentality to ask and then receive by taking the necessary steps toward the finish line?

The Art of Manifestation

By Sherry Winn

Many people ask me about how to manifest their desires. They want a simple formula. Something they can do a single time and get instantaneous results. Imagine doing something just one time and being an expert. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

In the 23 years I was a collegiate basketball coach, we never practiced one time and then thought we were prepared to play a game. We created what we wanted by continually practicing, revising and testing our skills. It was an ongoing process to become a good team.

Every year I coached, I learned something new that enhanced my ability. I became more effective and efficient because I had enhanced my skills through repetition and research.

Manifesting your dreams is a process. It requires awareness and the desire to improve who you are.

You might have been practicing manifesting for years without awareness because you allowed your thoughts to think you rather than being in control of your thoughts. Maybe you created unwanted circumstances or people in your life by putting all your energy into what you did not want. Maybe you manifested dis-ease because you put too much energy into guilt or shame. Maybe you formed a life of continual challenges because you believed there was no gain without pain.

Now that you are aware energy goes where attention flows, you can begin to practice where you put your attention. This requires effort. Thoughts flow through us quickly and many times these are thoughts we have practiced thinking, which means we have to develop a new habit of thinking different thoughts.

For example, if you believed there was no gain without pain, and you told yourself that message 30 times a day for 5 years, you would have lodged that thought pattern into your brain 54,650 times. In order to change the neural networks you have created through repetition, you replace your no gain, no pain thought with another thought. Instead of believing gain is associated with pain, you shift your belief system to the idea that goals are attained through sustained attention and right action. Pain does not need to be part of the process.

How do you practice manifesting?

1.  Take the time to become aware of your thoughts. Write down your 10 biggest beliefs and then list how those beliefs are serving you. If your beliefs are not serving you, it is time to change them.

2.  Read personal development books that focus on the positive.

3.  Use your car as a library. When you get in your car, commit to listening to 10-15 minutes of an audio book that will help you grow.

4.  Meditate daily. This is huge. Meditation opens your awareness and it allows you to practice letting go of unwanted thoughts.

5.  Assign one notebook to your goals. Fold the page in half at the midline. Every day write down five goals written in terms of affirmations (as if the goal has already occurred) on one half of the page. On the other half of the page, write down what beliefs are preventing you from achieving your goals.

6.  Note the beliefs you have that are preventing you from achieving your goals. Work on changing those beliefs.

7.  Repeat your affirmations throughout the day. See the affirmations in your head. Act as if you are already living your dreams.

By practicing to manifest your dreams, you not only receive what you want, you enhance who you are. This is the true practice of manifestation — the process of becoming wiser, more joyful, happier, more loving and kind. Once you become who you want to be, you attract more of what you want.

Law of Attraction: Ask to Serve

By Sherry Winn

We want to manifest our desires. We want to live the life of our dreams. We want to be happy, peaceful and serene – to experience the joy we read about in spiritual books, and to feel love written by the great poets. We want to marry our soul mate, live in harmony, and continue the honeymoon romance for decades. We want to buy new cars, live in mansions, and purchase our boats, ski jets, four wheelers and horses for the weekends.

We want. We want. We want.

The wanting of something is not evil, nor is the requesting of our dream. Yet, there is vital piece missing to the formula we think of as the Law of Attraction. If we are always wanting and asking, what is the Universe hearing?

“A Course in Miracles” states, “To give and receive are one in truth.”

If we receive what we give, what are we giving? What does it sound like to you when somebody says, “I want this. I want that. I want. I want. I want?”

Last week I was with a friend of mine, Sheila, and her two children at the grocery store. Sheila asked if I wanted to go into the store or stay in the minivan. I decided to go into the store. She unbuckled her two children from the backseat of the van and we all went inside to shop for apples, barbecue sauce and bread for dinner.

In the first aisle of the grocery store, the requests began. “Mom, can I have some chips?” “Mom, I’m hungry.” “Mom, I love this candy bar.” “Mom, I promise I’ll be good if you will just buy me my favorite ice cream.” I looked at Sheila apologetically, realizing too late what she had really asked of me was to keep her children from entering the store.

Sheila looked at me, her patience wearing thin from saying, “No” one too many times. “I cannot wait until my children can drive to the store for me.”

The Law of Attraction returns to us what we request.  If most of the time we say “I want,” then what is returned to us?

If we receive what we give, how would that change how we ask? Dr. Wayne Dyer, in his book, “I Can See Clearly Now,” emphasizes again and again during his successes of writing books and giving lectures, he asked not what he would receive, but how he could serve. Dr. Dyer believes the key to manifesting is taking the focus off of what we need and putting it on what we can offer.

“A Course of Miracles” suggests you close your eyes, and think of what you would offer to everyone and hold it as yours.

  • To all people, I offer the serenity of solitude.
  • To all people, I offer the experience of unconditional love.
  • To all people, I offer the awareness of abundance.
  • To all people, I offer the joy of perfect health.
  • To all people, I offer the completeness of peace of mind.

When we have the capacity to give to others, to feel the power of serving and knowing that in our service, we are receiving, we tap into the miracle of the Law of Attraction. When we take the focus off of lack, which is what we are doing when we continually ask, and focus on gifts, we change our asking from scarcity to abundance. We feel abundance. We feel peace. We feel love.

There is another great quote in the “A Course of Miracles,” which states, “No one can give what he has not received.” When you feel as if you have in your possession whatever you desire and you can give that away freely, you are giving and receiving at the same time.

The next time you begin to ask, think first of asking how you can give.

Law of Attraction: Believing Comes Before Creating

A friend of mine, Wendy, is a cowgirl who loves to team rope. She is a heeler, a unique position for a woman because most heelers are men. A roper has more challenges to rope the feet of a steer, which are constantly moving and changing direction rather than roping the horns, which have limited movement.

During recent roping events, Wendy has been in the zone, capturing her target with ease. When she told me about roping in the zone, she said: “It is surreal. I barely want to breathe fearing my breath might disrupt the mental zone I have been in. Everything is going right. I can’t miss.”

I responded: “Why don’t you change your belief system to think you can rope in the zone the majority of the time?”

“Belief comes from repeated success under the same conditions,” Wendy said.

Most people believe you have to experience success before you can have success. My friend believed there was only one way to get into the zone—practice the physical skills long enough until she had the confidence to create the success.

What if the truth was something different? What if the truth was she created success because she believed she should be successful? It wasn’t the practice, which allowed her to rope in the zone. It was the belief system. The key was she had to feel she deserved success.

Wendy was practicing the law of attraction whether she knew it or not. The more she practiced, the more she told herself she was good, and the more she told herself she was good, the better she became.

We can impact the flow of Source energy through us by expanding or contracting ourselves through our thoughts, which create our beliefs and in turn create our reality. Choosing and practicing positive thoughts expands us and opens us up to the flow of Source Energy and abundance. Choosing to focus on negative thoughts contracts us and constricts the flow of Source energy, creating limitations in our abilities, talents and potential and our circumstances overall.

The key to Wendy’s success was her belief she deserved to have limited success, yet she couldn’t see the possibility of roping in the zone on a consistent basis. This was a belief she learned from other people.

You don’t have to be like Wendy. By shifting your worthiness paradigm, you can live your life in the zone. You don’t have to physically practice a skill 10,000 times to be deserving of success, but you do have to shift your belief system.

How do you match your desires with the feeling of worthiness?

1.  Acknowledge you came from Source energy, and as such, you have the characteristics of Source energy.

2.  You are a creator and have the ability to create your life through your thoughts.

3.  We live in an abundant universe and are born with everything we need to live an abundant life.

4.  We are born worthy. We don’t have to become worthy. It is our right.

5.  Forgiveness has already happened. We are forgiven before we even act. We can shed our guilt and shame through this knowledge allowing more goodness to come in.

6.  The more we are willing to give love (peace, joy, compassion, understanding, etc.) to others, the more we transcend our own fears and open ourselves up to the flow of love and abundance in our lives.

7.  As we release resistance, and live in the state of receiving, we allow more goodness to flow through us.

If you are stuck like my friend Wendy in the old belief paradigm – that you have to work hard to be successful and then you can only touch the zone on occasion, then it is time to make a shift in your beliefs. You can only achieve what you believe and live what you believe you deserve.

Guilt and the Law of Attraction

By Sherry Winn

None of us would want to attack ourselves because what person loves the outcome of beating up on himself, right?

Most people would link the word “attack” to a physical act like slamming a fist into a wall or kicking a door. Others might think of an addiction to drugs or alcohol, or something a little more innocuous like an addiction to chocolate or caffeine. We might all agree these acts are labeled as attacks against ourselves.

But what about guilt? Do you consider guilt as attack against yourself?

Guilt has been viewed as something positive. It creates the needed punishment so we won’t choose the wrong path again. But is it the way to forgiveness, or is it simply of means of re-punishing ourselves and keeping ourselves stuck in misery for something we’ve already learned?

Guilt is the result of believing we are not worthy. Standing in guilt we cannot reach positive vibrations. We are separate and disconnected from love. Love is the highest vibration we can seek, and guilt exists on the low vibrational end of the spectrum.

A Course In Miracles states, “What guilt has wrought is ugly, fearful and very dangerous. See no illusion of truth and beauty there.”

We want to avoid negative emotions because we know they are the opposite of all we desire. When we feel bad, our energy vibrates at the wrong frequency causing us to attract the very thing we want to avoid. We create what we expect and invite those experiences into our lives. When we expect punishment, which is what guilt is, we experience it.

Recently, I was working with a young man, Justin, who is on the journey to becoming a professional baseball player. He understands the power of the law of attraction and works diligently to stay in alignment with his dream, but he also allows his guilt to attack his desires.

Even though Justin leads the league in batting, he began to doubt his talents. He said, “I feel if something is off in my life, I psyche myself out, which is my ego telling me I will not play well because I’ve made a mistake. The guilt sends me into a funk of unworthiness and I lose my ability to swing a bat.”

This is the power of the ego. It attacks with guilt and creates fear even when facts point in the opposite direction. The ego attacks our faith and shoves us out of positive vibration. As soon as Justin allowed guilt to enter his mind, his swing of the bat diminished.

How did Justin realign himself with positive vibrations to get his swing back? He took the same steps you can take:

1. Remind yourself the ego wants us in guilt and wishes us to bow down to a lack of faith.
2. The ego is the opposite of all you are.
3. You come from Source Energy.
4. As Source Energy, you are entitled to all good things.
5. Strength is the truth about you; weakness is an illusion.
6. When you fall into the ego’s trap of illusion, you are not aligning yourself with who you really are.
7. You are Source Energy and a creator in your life.

When we allow guilt to rule us and to shove our faith of goodness out, we attack ourselves. We create separation from who we were meant to be. Once separated, we can no longer feel positive vibration. Positive vibration is alignment with ALL that is good.

You came to this life experience to re-remember who you really are and to align yourself with all that is good. You are a creator and as such, you get to choose where to live your life. Guilt is a choice as is love. Love is connecting to your desires while guilt is attacking yourself. You came from love; it is your origin. Let go of guilt to experience your desires.

The Law of Right Action in Achieving Your Desires

By Sherry Winn

I recently talked to a 23-year-old woman who was disgusted with the law of attraction. She claimed it didn’t work, so I asked her, “Why do you think it doesn’t work?”

“I’ve been trying to attract a new life, and I’m still living my old one,” she said.

So I asked her what she has done differently to attract a new life, and she told me,

“I’ve worked on changing my mindset. I focus on what I want, not what I don’t want. I’ve visualized. I’ve meditated. I’ve said affirmations and little has changed.”

“How long have you been working at changing your mindset?” I asked.

She crossed her arms, sighed in exasperation and said, “Six months.”

Having an attitude like hers is nothing new. We want what we want when we want it. We live in a society where we can get a complete meal in two minutes, order a book on Kindle and receive it within seconds, and TiVo our favorite shows so we can fast forward through unwanted commercials. We think we should attract what we desire in seconds, in minutes or at least in six months.

I understood frustration. She made a decision and then made a commitment to change her habits. She knew the importance of creating the right mindset and the necessary steps to create that mindset.

When I asked what action steps she had taken to change her life, she responded, “I’ve changed my mindset.”

But what she didn’t understand is the law of attraction also involves the “Law of Right Action.” It is not just about creating the right thinking; it is about taking the right action steps, too.

For years I imagined my perfect body weight. I pasted an athletic body on a vision board with a trim waist, muscular biceps and skinny thighs, and then superimposed my head on the body. I visualized my perfect body weight. I read my affirmations with positive feelings. I changed my diet. I exercised. I did nutritional cleanses. What happened? My weight continued to climb. And I got angry. I did all the things I was supposed to do, and I got the opposite of what I desired. I was on the edge of believing this law of attraction thing was for the birds.

Yet I persisted. I continued to have faith. Finally, a friend tossed out the idea my thyroid might not be working correctly. I did a blood and saliva test and discovered my adrenals and thyroid were malfunctioning, which causes weight gain, fatigue and depression. Even though I had been taking action steps, I hadn’t been taking the right ones for me. I kept doing the wrong things over and over again expecting new results. I was acting, but not in the right way. When I corrected my supplements, I saw immediate weight loss.

This is critical to understand. The law of attraction gets you in the right mindset, which allows you to take action. Most people never take the first step because they can’t get beyond their minds. Once you have faith, believing you will get what you want, it is much easier to take action. Then you must take the “right” action. If you don’t take the right action, you will do what I did, and just keep getting better at getting worse, which drives you straight to frustration and doubt.

It was actually through the law of attraction that I attracted that friend who had the answer for me!

There is no doubt about that in my mind, yet I still had to take the right actions to get the best outcomes. If you are not getting what you want and you have the right mindset, check your action steps.

Success is just an inch away from where you are.
