Editor’s Advice: Taking Control of Our Health
Over the past six months, I’ve been focused on detoxing my life. I completed an 8-week
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class; tossed all my old skincare and make-up products full of toxic ingredients and chemicals; replaced all my cleaning products with healthier options; and completely changed my diet toward healing and organic foods. I’ve even been clearing clutter and re-organizing my home and office.
And it all started with a health issue. I have been suffering from allergies since I was 5 years old. In fact, I couldn’t even drink dairy-based formula when I was a baby. At 37 years old, and thanks to the Universe and a number of synchronicities, I finally figured out my problem, and then went to a doctor to get it confirmed.
I have a mast cell activation disorder. This causes me to have “allergic” reactions to certain foods (especially those high in histamine), certain chemicals, and even stress. Yes, you read that correct. I said stress. Under stress, my body will pour out the same chemicals as someone having an allergic reaction to food or pollen. We all have these cells, but mine activate more easily than they should. I’ll be talking and writing more about it soon, but needless to say, this past year has been all about detoxing my mind, body and spirit. And I’ve never felt better.
So it was no surprise when the Universe presented me with an opportunity to interview Emmy-nominated actress and health advocate Fran Drescher for the cover story of the September 2015 Issue of Elevated Existence Magazine. As the founder of Cancer Schmancer, an organization dedicated to prevention and early diagnosis of cancer, and a survivor of uterine cancer, Drescher and Cancer Schmancer teach the importance of detoxing the home, including the products we use on ourselves, eating non-GMO and organic foods, and nourishing our minds with mindfulness and meditation. And she lives what she teaches. In fact, the Cancer Schmancer programs grew from Drescher’s own experiences, and what started out as a focus on early detection, quickly evolved to include prevention.
“Over 95 percent of most illness, including cancer, is environmentally stimulated,” Drescher says in the September 2015 Issue. “We could effectively reduce our risk of getting cancer and a lot of other things, including asthma, autoimmune problems, migraines, the list goes on and on, if we change what we are using in our environment.”
In order to help you on your own detox journey, the September 2015 issue also features a Food as Medicine column focused on how toxins in our food may be sabotaging our weight loss, and a Healing Corner column full of tips on how to detox the body. It even has an article with organizing expert Meryl Starr to help us clear the negative energy of clutter.
It’s time for us to take control of our health, whether that’s dialing down the stress, changing our diet, dumping toxic products or starting an exercise routine. Start small. Start now. I hope the September 2015 Issue will inspire and help you on your way.
