Finding Success With the Law of Attraction

By Sherry Winn

Does the law of attraction work? Absolutely. When it fails to work, it’s not the law that is the issue. It’s the way it’s being applied.

The law of attraction cannot work if there is an underlying belief that goes against what you desire. If your conscious mind desires a new $500,000 house, but your subconscious mind believes you are not worthy of living in a $500,000 home, your subconscious mind wins out every time.

In a coaching session this week, a client said, “I am so sick of being positive. I’ve tried being positive, and it doesn’t work. I’ve tried this law of attraction stuff, and I’m still stuck. I’m still living the same life I have been living despite reciting affirmations every day.”

She was ready to throw in the towel until I asked her to examine why she thought the law of attraction wasn’t working. I prodded her with questions until she admitted she didn’t believe she was worthy of having what she wanted. Her subconscious mind was overruling her conscious efforts. She needed to shift her paradigm.

It is not enough to say affirmations, have a vision board, or visualize. You have to change your internal belief system. If your inner landscape consists of the belief that life is hard, scarcity is real, there is not enough to go around, only some people make it to the top, or you are constantly being punished for your imperfections, then your subconscious mind is driving your boat. It is why you are going around in circles rather than moving toward your goals.

In order to receive, you must create a shift in what you believe. In order to receive abundance, you must believe that abundance is part of our package. It is available for all people to have. It is not based on talent, luck of the draw, or genes. It is a gift from the Universe. We all have the opportunity to receive it, and if we fail to receive it, it is because we haven’t yet made the connection to the understanding we are meant to live in joy, happiness, love, and financial abundance.

This shift in paradigms means you might have to separate yourself from what your parents, religious leaders, or the actors on reality shows have taught you. How do you do this? You consciously create new habits of thinking.

Tony Robbins said, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”

My client kept doing the same things expecting different results. She believed if she kept working harder at doing the things that weren’t working, she would make them work. Working harder doesn’t change reality. If you keep practicing the wrong things, you just keep getting better at getting worse, which in turn creates a negative attitude. It is not about working harder; it is about working right. It is about doing the right things to create the results desired.

How do you create a shift in your beliefs? You create new habits of thinking by:

  • Reading books that promote abundance such as “A Course in Miracles.”
  • Using guided abundance meditations on YouTube.
  • Listening to people like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Abraham-Hicks and Deepak Chopra.
  • Seeking out people who have experienced success using the law of attraction.
  • Asking yourself what limiting beliefs you hold, and then using different techniques like Ho’oponono or Emotional Freedom Technique to let them go.

Take a moment to do a gut check. Are you failing to get what you desire because you have limiting beliefs holding you in limbo? If so, you are the answer to your dilemma. The answer is always you. Make a shift in your paradigm so you can receive all you desire.

The Law of Action (in the Law of Attraction)

By Sherry Winn

There is one aspect of the law of attraction that many people refuse to talk about, and that is the aspect of ACTION.

It is true you must first work on your mind before you can believe you can achieve anything, but the belief in itself is not enough. You have to take action on the ideas and dreams that have been cultivating in your mind.

The first step is intention – knowing what you want and having the intention you will get it, but how many people have you met who had the intention of doing something and never took the first step? They tell you they want to be the next Michael Jordan, Lady Gaga, or Ernest Hemingway, but they spend all their time daydreaming and none of their time taking action steps.

The most important step to take once you have your mind attracting what you want, and you’ve worked on your internal language, is to take action. Once you have birthed an idea, you have given it creation in the universe. It is there for others to also find and view. If you fail to take action on it, somebody else will, and you lose your opportunity.

Those who found success utilizing the law of attraction are those who spent time moving toward their dreams. One of the best ways to move toward your dreams is to write them down. Something magical happens when you write dreams down on paper. The dream gets a life of it’s own. It becomes a possibility that can stare back at you, and ask what you’re going to do about it. The act of writing gives you a permanent record, shows you are serious, keeps you accountable and helps you work things through.

When you write down your dreams, include the following components:

1. Be specific.
2. Include a deadline.
3. Begin with the end in mind.
4. Write down goals in time increments. Write down 10-year, 5-year, 3-year, and 1-year goals.
5. Write down why you want to accomplish your dreams. What is the compelling reason you have behind reaching your dreams?
6. Proclaim your dreams. Affirm you dreams. Post your dreams.

Writing your dreams down is an action step. You have made a promise to yourself. The next step is to take action and move toward your dreams. How?

Look back at the dreams you’ve written down. Take one of them and break it down even further. What do you want to accomplish in the next 30 days? Write down what you need to do every day to reach your 30-day goal.

Then, take action. Do something even if it doesn’t feel like it is taking you closer to what you really desire. Move. You might make mistakes, but this is part of the process. You learn and grow from mistakes, which move you forward.

Here are some other things to keep in mind:

1.  Take responsibility for your dreams.
2.  Continue to work on your thoughts because how you think about things really matters.
3.  Make your reason behind your dreams big enough that you are willing to move beyond obstacles.
4.  Commit to studying and learning every day.
5.  Act as if success is certain.
6.  Share your dreams.
7.  Stretch your mind and see all possibilities.

When you train your mind to focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want, you are utilizing the law of attraction. This allows you to dream and to believe you can achieve. It provides you with the faith needed to take action. What remains is taking the first step and then the next and then the next until you are not just thinking about your dreams, but you are living them.

Law of Attraction: You Get What You Give

By Sherry Winn

I heard a heartbreaking story the other day about parents who disowned their daughter because she came out to them as a lesbian. Their religious beliefs held that being a homosexual was a sin, so they chose not to love the “sin” of their daughter. To them, it also meant they couldn’t love their daughter.

I include this story not to determine who is right or wrong. It is not about the rightness. It is about the choice of love and the choice of judgment.

Why is this important in the law of attraction?

What does it feel like when love is removed from your life? Take a moment to reflect on how that feels. Can you remember a partner deserting you, a parent withholding affection, or the loss of beloved pet? When you think back on that loss, what do you feel?

  • Anger?
  • The desire for justice?
  • Abandoned?
  • Unworthy?
  • A hole in your heart?

If you sit in silence and allow yourself to move through that experience, does it feel like an old story absent of emotion? Or does it still hold some negative vibrations within you? If you can tell the story without your stomach getting queasy, your heart aching, or tension in your shoulders, then you have left the story behind you. If you still have a body part or emotion attached to the story, you have not given yourself permission to move beyond it.

When you hold the absence of love within you, you are holding negative vibrations. You are not permitting the greatest source of energy to flow through you. Positive vibrations are necessary to attract more of the things you love.

It is easy to believe we can love some people and hate others — that there is some line we can draw between love and hate as if this invisible barrier makes us immune to the negative vibrations of hate. It is okay to hate others who are bad. Right?

There is a quote from “A Course in Miracles,” which states:

“When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see in him, you will also see in yourself. As you treat him, you will also treat yourself.”

We cannot separate the emotion we feel for others from ourselves. When we offer hatred, disgust, revulsion, misunderstanding or judgment toward others, it does not somehow jump on them and leave us. We are left with the residue of those emotions. We harbor them. What we think we give to another is, in fact, what we offer ourselves.

The law of attraction is about vibrations — positive, free-flowing vibrations. If you want to attract love, but withhold love, are you offering both a positive and a negative vibration in the same moment? Are you contradicting yourself? In truth, you are pulling in opposite directions and wanting one side to win.

The question to ask yourself is: What side do I want to win? The side which withholds love from another because I do not understand or agree with him, or the side of me which believes I am worthy of unconditional love even though I cannot give it?

Maybe you judged the parents who disowned their daughter because they wanted to honor their religious beliefs. Or maybe you judged the daughter who is a lesbian. It is not the question of who you judged. It is the question of how the judgment feels within you.

When you judge another, what are you judging about yourself? And how does that judgment feel?

It is the feeling that determines your ability to attract. The more negative vibrations you have within you, the harder it is to attract what you desire. How do you learn to be more loving and nonjudgmental? This is a lifelong quest, but you can begin with simple steps:

  1. Become aware of how the emotions you are emitting feel inside you.
  2. Practice saying, “I love you” to yourself.
  3. Engage in the art of empathy.
  4. Recognize judgments as they come and release them.
  5. Align yourself with people who are on a quest of personal development.

The law of attraction is the law of positive vibrations. By learning to love more and judge less, you are aligning yourself with greater opportunities.

Law of Attraction: Shifting the Paradigm to Manifest

By Sherry Winn

Let’s start off by defining a paradigm? It is the reality in which you live. In other words, it is the model, the pattern and the template of how you perceive the world. In order to find success in the law of attraction, you need to shift how you experience the world.

For example, let’s take goal setting. You have probably planned and took action, and there have been times life sent you three curveballs in a row. You may have perceived these as something outside of yourself, and outside of your ability to control. You may have believed that no matter how much you planned, it really didn’t matter. Life had rules of its own.

This is your model. You have lived it and heard it all your life. You believe you can control your reactions to events, but you don’t have the power to control the events themselves.

You’ve based your entire life on having a positive attitude, seeking the best within situations. You’ve been able to take difficult situations and find happiness within them. You feel good about this. And you should. You are happier and more joyful, but you are not living the dreams you desire. You are accepting life as it is.

Is this bad? No. It is a great step toward living your dreams because you are raising your vibration by being positive. Having high vibrations are a crucial step toward attracting what you want.

However, there is a difference between believing you have to accept what you have now and finding happiness within it, and intentionally raising your vibration knowing you are not yet where you want to be.

Total Responsibility
In order to live the law of attraction, you need to believe you are absolutely responsible for ALL things that happen to you — the good and the bad. OUCH! When I first heard this, I balked at the idea. Who wants to believe they are attracting being fired, chronic pain, or being dumped by a partner?

I know for a fact, I never said, “I want to develop chronic pain and live in agony for years.” Who would say that? I do know, though, that I believed the following:

  • Life wasn’t fair.
  • Bad things happened to good people.
  • You don’t get to choose your life. You get to choose your attitude.
  • Whatever will be will be. The future is not ours to see. (K-surah, surah)
  • We don’t get everything we want. Life doesn’t work that way.
  • There is not enough good to go around, so some people get stuck with the bad.

Can you see where my paradigm was stuck? Even though I didn’t want chronic pain or to get fired, I believed in a philosophy of life that determined the way I saw the world. I expected life to be unfair. I anticipated pain. I believed certain unpleasant things were just going to happen to me.

Due to my belief system, I was attracting what I thought about most of the time. I was responsible for creating the emotional and physical pain I felt.

Acknowledging the Creator Within
In order to live the law of attraction, a true shift had to take place. I had to believe I had more power than I realized. This was scary to acknowledge I was born with a gift to create. I was a creator.

You, too, are a creator. We create with our thoughts, which determine our actions. Imagine what would happen if you shifted your belief system to include total responsibility. What would happen if you were able to change your thoughts to believe you had the power to create your life, not just accept it?

What would happen if you changed your philosophy like I changed mine?

  • Life is fair.
  • Things happen because we attract them.
  • You get to choose your life by changing your thoughts.
  • The future is ours to create.
  • We get what we believe we can have.
  • There is more than enough. We can all live abundantly.

Can you see now how a shift in paradigm can change how the law of attraction works for you?

Why the Law of Attraction Works Every Time

By Sherry Winn

Why should you believe in the law of attraction? After all, you didn’t read about it in school textbooks when you were taught all the important laws of the universe, like the law of gravity and Einstein’s formula for relativity: E=mc2. If it wasn’t written about in your science book, and you didn’t hear about it in philosophy, psychology or history, then how do we know it’s true?

Well, thanks to scientists, we now know we have something called “mirror neurons,” which are neurons that mirror the behavior of others who are being observed. In other words, when we observe somebody smiling at somebody else, that same pattern of brain activation that allows the person to smile is emulated in our brain. Even though we might not physically act on the behavior, the same areas of our brains, the regions that prepare the body for movement and attention are triggered. This means our brains mirror the actions of the other person automatically.

Think about this for a moment. When you are watching a television show or a movie, how do you physically react when tension is building? Even though you are not a part of the scene, your heart is racing; your stomach gets tense; and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, even though you know it’s only a movie. This is because your brain is copying those you are watching.

Through brain imaging, scientists have also detected a portion of the brain called the amygdala. This is the part of the brain that hosts the limbic system or the “fight or flight” system, which is where our fears are recorded.

When people are shown pictures or photographs of fearful faces, the amygdala is stimulated in the observer creating the same fearful response. What is more intriguing is people whose brains have been damaged leading to blindness still have their amygdala fire up when they are subjected to fearful faces.

And what is perhaps more intriguing, is there are ways to change the experiment so people are entirely unaware they are seeing those fearful faces. However, when you look at their brains during the period they are unaware of seeing the faces, the amygdala still activates.

Thus, fear in others will register in our brains as fear. Another person’s lit up amygdala will light up our own. We “attract” the fear to ourselves because we are connected to other people and their brains instantly. That is why anxious people make other people anxious, and fearful people make other people afraid.

The good news is, similar principles apply to happiness and expected reward when our brains will light up those centers that correspond with these emotional states in others.

What Energy is Behind Your Thoughts?
When it comes to the law of attraction, whatever signal you are sending out is being received by a similar vibration. Take a second to inventory what type of thoughts you are sending out into the universe.

Before you are convinced you’re sending out positive thoughts, look behind the thought. In other words, let’s pretend you want a new job and you are continually asking for the new job. Your thought is you would like to have a new job. That single thought emits a somewhat neutral energy. In fact, it could be positive energy when you think about the great things a new job could offer you like a higher salary, better working conditions, shorter hours, and a competent boss.

But what is the energy behind that thought? Maybe you are desperate for a new job, because the job you are currently working is stressful. You need more money to pay your bills. You feel anxious, stressed and even desperate. When you are thinking about a new job, even if you can see some of the potential of the new job, where is your energy mostly focused — on the positive aspects of a new job or the fear of not getting what you want?

This is where quantum physics comes to play. What does quantum physics teach? In a nutshell, the Copenhagen Interpretation by Niels Bohr explained it is meaningless to ascribe any properties or even existence to anything which has not been observed, but the problem with this is that whatever is observed is changed by the observer. So, in essence what we expect to see is what we see.

This is where we can understand the law of attraction is true!

  • Our thoughts and our emotions are energy.
  • Both of these are interrupted by what we expect to see.
  • Our emotions behind our thoughts actually emit a stronger signal.
  • When we can align our emotions with what we desire, we are aligning the energy to our expectations.
  • We are then creating our world through our thoughts and emotions, because we are what we observe.

Perhaps you weren’t taught the law of attraction in school. Heck, maybe you weren’t even taught the basics of quantum physics. BUT know that you can control the creations of your universe. It is time to learn to use your power to manifest your desires!

Using a Training Principle to Build Law of Attraction Success

By Sherry Winn

A few years ago, there was a big explosion around the law of attraction (LOA) due to the book, “The Secret.” The law of attraction was a buzzword. It seemed everybody was saying it. People were grabbing onto it like a lifeline, spouting out the words they had read as if the words themselves were going to produce mass miracles.

Then, like most fads, the fervor died down a bit. Many people claimed it was a conspiracy, a lie, or a plot to make money. After all, they had tried the philosophy behind the law of attraction and it had not worked for them; therefore, it must be false.

The problem with most people is when they heard about the law of attraction, they wanted to use it to solve their biggest issues on the first try. This is a little like being drastically out of shape and then deciding on your first run to conquer a marathon. If you had never run in your life except in elementary school on the playground, it might be a bit naïve of you to expect success on your first run.

If you were training for a marathon, even if you had been running three miles a day for several years, you wouldn’t go out on your first day and try to run 26 miles. You would know to gradually increase your mileage from three miles to six to 10, and then an occasional very long run. You would not expect your body to be able to adapt to 26 miles just because you decided you wanted to run that far. You would understand the necessity for starting small and building toward success.

This training principle is exactly the same for learning to use the law of attraction. You want to start with small steps, gain confidence and then build toward bigger goals.

In fact, when I heard about the law of attraction and the premise of it sounded so simple, I decided I wanted to heal my principal issue, chronic pain, which had caused me the biggest heartache. This made sense to me, because if there was a solution to my chronic pain, then I wanted to be able to cure it.

Here were the challenges that occurred for me when I went after my biggest issue first:

1.   I was too wrapped around the issue emotionally.

2.  My emotions were charged with negativity (pain and fear).

3.  I felt intense desire (which feeds the lack of something).

4.  It was difficult to get in alignment with the feeling of having something when I NEEDED it so badly.

5.  Because I had not experienced success with working with the LOA, I was working from a place of doubt, which brought in negative vibrations.

Needless to say I wasn’t successful which made me initially believe the LOA didn’t work, but because I was an athletic coach at the time, I also knew the importance of breaking down a skill in order to learn it. I decided to train for the LOA like I would train for a game. After all, I would never expect my athletes to succeed without breakdowns and repetitions of the skills I wanted them to learn.

Some of the things I learned which helped ease my pain and give me my lives back are:

1.  I practiced on something which wasn’t highly charged for me emotionally like getting a parking space.

2.  I focused on seeing what I wanted and feeling myself having it.

3.  I let go of any of the attachment I had to getting it.

4.  I had faith and belief that it would come to me at the right time.

5.  If I didn’t succeed on the first try, I let it go. Beating myself up over failure only added more negative energy.

I learned, as I practiced, I could manifest more things.

AND you can too.

Start with something small, something that doesn’t have a highly charged emotion attached to it. Gain confidence and knowledge, and then build toward your other goals.
