Romancing the Stars: Are You Astrologically Compatible with Your Mate?

By Dr. Craig Martin

One of the things astrology can tell us is love compatibility. Now, compatibility doesn’t always equal love, but love without compatibility is a rough ride. When we can find someone we’re compatible with and then discover there’s love also, it’s the best scenario possible.

Astrology is elemental. That means each of the 12 signs are connected to one of the natural elements: Fire, Air, Water and Earth. The Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and are strongly associated with passion, motivation and creativity. The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, and represent the mind. They are the communicators, thinkers and socializers of the zodiac. The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and are emotional, sensitive and empathic. And the Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, which are connected to reliability, practicality and tangible results.

Many people are curious about which sign is best for them. If they are Leo, they want to know if dating a Gemini is a good match – which by the way, it is. And likewise, the same Leo wants to know if dating a Scorpio is as bad as they say – and it is!

But there is one problem with creating these broad brushstrokes and generalities. Some Leos are less fiery than others. You see, charts are complicated, and astrological information is based on more than just your Sun sign. It might be better to view ourselves in an elemental way. A more basic approach to our personality can give us a more accurate insight into who we are most compatible with in the astrological world.

For instance, if you are Leo and you fit into that category of Fire type personality, then you are strong, bold, outgoing and creative – the life of the party for sure! Strongly Fire people are most compatible with either another Fire type or Air. However, let’s say that you are a Fire sign, but you’re more of the emotional, sensitive and empathetic type of person. That would mean you have more Water in your chart and you might identify more closely with Water signs. In this example, our Fire type person would be more compatible with Water or Earth.

But let’s make it really simple. Fire and Air are compatible, and Water and Earth are compatible. Also, each element is compatible with other people of the same element – like Earth and Earth or Air and Air. The trick is knowing which elemental style you are, and most people can make an accurate assessment of their type. Once you know your element, you can figure out what style of person you will have the most compatibility with overall.

Don’t get me wrong – some Leos make it work with some Scorpios, and even when the combination is strong Fire and strong Water with potentially a lot of conflict, some couples make it work. But the key is those couples are the exception, not the rule.

Finding love begins best with some amount of friendship, harmony and mutual interest. Those qualities are found most readily when you’re with someone who is elementally compatible to you. Think of it like vinegar and oil or peanut butter and jelly. Those combinations make good bedfellows, while vinegar and peanut butter or oil and jelly – well, you get the idea.
